A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Tree Transplanting

Relocating a tree in your yard may seem like a difficult task, but with the right approach and careful planning, it can be done safely and effectively. Whether you’re trying to move a small tree to a sunnier spot or want to make space for new landscaping, understanding how to transplant trees correctly is essential. We believe in helping you maintain the beauty and health of your garden, and this guide will walk you through the important steps of tree transplantation.

When is the Best Time for Tree Transplanting?

Timing can play a critical role in the success of a tree transplant, however in Brisbane’s subtropical climate we’re lucky that tree transplanting can be successfully carried out at any time of the year, however you would ideally try to avoid Winter or Summer if possible.  If the transplanting had to be carried out in Winter or Summer, it would be recommended to check the 7 week forecast to ensure that temperatures are not excessively hot (33 degrees Celsius or above), or excessively cold (5 degrees Celsius or under).

How to Transplant a Small Tree

A small tree, typically defined as having a trunk diameter of two inches or less, is usually manageable to transplant on your own. Follow these detailed steps to ensure the process goes smoothly.

1. Prepare the Tree

The first step in transplanting a tree is preparing it for the move. Water the tree thoroughly at least 7 days before the transplant to make the soil moist and workable and apply Seaweed emulsion as per manufacturers specification.  This ensures the roots are well hydrated, which helps reduce shock and makes it easier to dig up the root ball.

2. Choose a Suitable Location

Before digging, you must identify the ideal new location for your tree. Look for a spot with the appropriate light, space, and soil conditions that match the tree’s needs. Make sure the area is free from underground utilities to avoid complications during planting.

3. Dig a Hole

At the new site, dig a hole 3 times the width of the root ball but only as deep as the current root system. This extra space allows the roots to spread out and take hold in the fresh soil without being cramped. It’s crucial to have the hole ready before digging up the tree to minimise the time the roots are exposed to air, reducing the risk of damage.

4. Dig Up the Tree

With a sharp spade, dig around the base of the tree to form a root ball. For small trees, try to keep the root ball intact as much as possible to protect the delicate root system. Once the root ball is formed, carefully lift the tree from the base (not the trunk) to avoid causing damage.

5. Relocate and Replant

Gently move the tree to its new location. Place it in the hole, ensuring the root ball’s top sits just above ground level. Remove any coverings like burlap or twine, fill the hole with the original soil, and water thoroughly to help settle the tree in place.

6. Monitor the Tree

After planting, you’ll need to give the tree some extra care. Water it regularly to help it recover from transplant shock and monitor for any signs of stress, such as wilting or yellowing leaves.

How to Transplant a Large Tree

Transplanting larger trees presents a unique set of challenges. The roots are more extensive, and the weight of the root ball can make the process far more difficult. While the steps are similar to moving a smaller tree, the scale and complexity mean that you should always consider hiring professionals for large tree transplants.  For detailed information on how to plant more advanced trees, you can read through my blog on this topic by clicking here.

Why You Should Hire a Professional Arborist

  1. Heavy Duty Equipment: Large trees require specialised equipment to dig out the root ball and safely transport it to the new location. Without the proper tools, you run the risk of damaging the tree or causing injury.
  2. Root Ball Integrity: Keeping the root ball intact is critical for the tree’s survival. With larger trees, maintaining this during the move is much harder due to the sheer size and weight.
  3. Minimising Damage: Arborists have the skills to safely dig around and lift the tree, ensuring that minimal damage occurs to the roots. The experts understand how to replant the tree correctly to maximise its chances of thriving in its new location.

By engaging the services of an experienced arborist from North Brisbane Trees, you can ensure that your large tree is moved safely and with minimal disruption to its growth.
